Mavs swimmers OFSAA golden

By Jon Yaneff

For the second straight year, the Mayfield Secondary School girls’ relay swim team captured Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Associations (OFSAA) gold at Etobicoke Olympium (Etobicoke Swim Club) March 2 and 3.

The team of Grace Wilkinson, Alana Colgan, Kristina Stojadinovic and Danielle Ranieri placed first in the women’s 400 (4 x 100) SC metre freestyle relay event with a time of 4:04.77. Last year’s bronze medalist, Nelson High School, placed second this year with a time of 4:08.35. Waterloo Collegiate Institute placed third this year with a time of 4:09.16.

“These girls have all participated in club swim meets,” explained coach Michell Harshman-Bettig, whose team swims with the Cobra Swim Club in Etobicoke. “OFSAA is a little bit different because they are competing for their schools. As a result they will see many of their friends at the meet, potentially even ones from their club, but they compete against them and not with them.”

Last year’s relay team consisted of Danielle’s sister Courtney, Wilkinson, Colgan and Stojadinovic. They won gold with a time of 4:02.31.

Mayfield teams managed remarkable finishes, including the open combined team scores that put Mayfield in fourth place with 357.50 points. The men’s swim team placed seventh with 261 points. With combined team scores, they finished eighth with 626.50 points.

Other Mayfield competitors finished as follows: men’s 15 and over 100 SC metre IM – Jennsen Lott, 17th with prelim time: 1:09.78. Women’s 100 SC metre IM – Kristina Stojadinovic, sixth with prelim time: 1:09.92, finals time: 1:09.40. Women’s 15 and over 100 SC metre backstroke – Julia Kittner, 25th with prelim time: 1:22.37. Men’s 14 and under 50 SC metre backstroke – Cole Sibbald, eighth with prelim time: 32.92, finals time: 32.14. Men’s 15 and over 200 SC metre freestyle relay – Mayfield team, fourth with prelim time: 1:45.70, finals time: 1:45.94. Men’s 400 SC metre freestyle relay – Mayfield, 11th, finals time: 3:56.43.
