Fire & Ice: A wintertime festival at the Alton Mill this weekend

The Alton Mill will be presenting Fire & Ice, a family festival of flames, food and fine art this weekend

It will run from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. Saturday, and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday.

Visitors will be invited to take part in this wintertime festival that will feature interactive events, both indoors and outdoors, including creative art workshops, and take part in an interactive digital camera course, challenge creativity at a pottery workshop (for both children and adults), learn how to draw horses, make jewelry or some cool stuff using recycled textiles, discover scratchboard art, or bring the kids and enjoy a story time featuring Tracy Smith.

Outdoors will feature the first ever Millpond Charity Hockey Game Saturday at noon, when the Caledon Notables face-off against the Alton Firefighters, with all proceeds raised during shooting contest and 50/50 draw going to support Caledon Youth Services.

The puck will drop at noon.

Councillor Doug Beffort announced this week he’ll be suiting up for the notables and that retired NHL linesman Ray Scapinello will be officiating

There also promises to be a Winter Wonderland walk, lead by the Bruce Trail Association’s Albert McMaster.

As well, there will be an igloo making session, a family skate or game of shinny on the Millpond, great storytellers. And there will be the chance to warm up in front of the unique outdoor fire pit, and try a maple syrup snow pop.

Alton Mill resident artists will also be presenting Winter’s Work Art Show in the Millrace Room, with works from the Mill’s more than 30 artists, in various mediums including illustration, textile art, pottery, photography, printmaking, handcrafted furniture, jewelry, stained glass and sculpture.

Saturday evening watch Canada’s foremost firesculpting artist Dennis Bolohan create a work of art that will unfold into an art object as it burns.

I visited the fabulous Alton Mill and its next door neighbour, the Millcroft last October. There are some great artists' studios at the mill and the latest work on the mill and its grounds are impressive.
