CCS updates Region of is work and plans for future
      Caledon Community Services (CCS) does a lot for residents of the area, but it's always a good idea to make sure other jurisdictions know what they do. CCS Executive Director Monty Laskin and Director of Community Programs Bev Lashbrook appeared before Peel Regional council last week with a review of the services the agency provides, as well as emerging trends.

Region approves accessibility standards for social housing developments
      In its commitment to accessibility for all residents, Peel Regional council has approved a report on universal accessibility standards (UAS) for new social housing projects developed by the Region. UAS was developed through a collaboration between the Region's Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC), staff and sector partners.

      The Zonta Club of Brampton — Caledon is excited to welcome nominations for its 2009 Women of Achievement Awards. The awards recognize women from Brampton and Caledon who have made exemplary contributions to their communities. Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 15.

CARRIER OF THE MONTH
     Laura Calvert is the Caledon Citizen's Carrier of the Month. Laura, 16, has been carrying the paper for almost four years, along a route she took over from her brother. She delivers 75 papers per week and has been doing an excellent job. For her services, she was presented with passed from Empire Theatres in Bolton.

Local community theatre group is best in Ontario
Blackhorse Village Players
      This past weekend, the Caledon-based Blackhorse Village Players (BVP) competed in the 2009 Theatre Ontario Festival in Ottawa, and won. The local troupe's production of David Lindsay- Abaire's Rabbit Hole was named Outstanding Festival Production.

Town approves Bolton Community Improvement Plan
      Following extensive stakeholder consultation and input, Caledon council has approved a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) for Bolton. Its approval and implementation is seen as a significant step toward fostering private/public partnerships in the municipality's highestpopulated community.

Heritage Caledon Bus Tour coming in June
      Heritage Caledon and the Town's Heritage Resource Office invite you to join them June 5 for the 2009 Heritage Bus Tour, Chinguacousy Lost and Found. Touring through the Peel Plain farm lands of the former Chinguacousy Township, they will be exploring what remains of the land of the tall pines. The bus will depart from the Brampton Fairgrounds at 8:45 a.m.

CHEQUE TO BETHELL HOUSE
     Last month's Hospice Caledon fashion show, A Spring Affair, was a big success in raising money for Bethell House, the 10-bed residential end-of-life care facility that is being built in Inglewood. Doreen Beffort (third from left), who chaired the show committee, presented a cheque Tuesday for $27,000 to Hospice Caledon Executive Director Heather Zak (third from right) and Board Vice-Chair Mary Hatch at the construction site. They were flanked by committee members Linda Lockyer, Lois Burley, Gerry Merkley, Susanne McRoberts and Nell Crathern. Hospice hopes construction will be completed by the fall, and open for residents by December.

Caledon OPP is getting a new detachment commander
      OPP Inspector Rose DiMarco is about to take on a new challenge, running the police service in Canada's safest community. DiMarco is slated to take on her new duties as detachment commander for Caledon OPP June 1. She has been the acting inspector of prosecutions in the OPP Professional Standards Bureau (PS) since November 2008.

Dirt bike was stolen in Bolton
      A resident of Westchester Boulevard reported the theft of a dirt bike from his garage to Caledon OPP last Tuesday (May 5). The bike was locked in the garage, and it's believed it was stolen sometime 8 p.m. Monday and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

      Quick thinking by witnesses is being credited with the rescue of an elderly man who fell into the Humber River in Bolton last Wednesday.

      Peel Region paramedics are hosting a number of events to mark this as Paramedic Week, from May 17 to 23. They are holding CPRAwareness drop-by sessions for people who want to learn how they can save a life. The next one is today (Thursday) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Square One Mall, Mississauga.
