Caledon Townhall Players donate scripts to library
CTHP, an amateur community theatre group that has been producing live theatre in the old Caledon Township Hall since 1962, has contributed close to 100 theatre scripts that they previously used or owned. New scripts are purchased every year by the group in order to put together the season for the following year. CTHP typically considers up to a dozen plays for each season, but only three are chosen. That means the script collection contains both past productions and plays that may never have made it on to the CTHP stage. The current value of the donated collection is in the neighbourhood of $1,000. Since the group likes to produce Canadian works, many of the plays are by Canadian playwrights. The Caledon Public Library Script Collection was the idea of Andrew Welch, who is currently serving as artistic director of CTHP. "It was getting difficult to keep track of all of the scripts owned by the group and to make them accessible to members," he commented, adding CTHP decided to let the library manage the scripts. It is also hoped that other theatre groups in Caledon will consider donating their script collections, thereby expanding the collection. "The script collection, which will be located at the Caledon village branch, is available to anyone with a Caledon Public Library card" said Bill Manson, CEO of Caledon Public Library. "We are excited about this new collection that will appeal to members of local community theatres in the area, as well as drama students in arts-based school programs." CTHP produces three or four plays annually. The Canadian comedy-thriller When the Reaper Calls by Peter Colley is currently being performed by the group.
