Fire halls will be on display in honour of Fire Prevention Week This year's theme for Fire prevention Week is a very useful one; Prevent Home Fires. A pot holder too close to a lit burner or clothing too close to a space heater could be all it takes to start a home fire. In fact, cooking and heating equipment are among the leading causes of home fires in Ontario. Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 5 to 11, is addressing the leading cause of home fires in Ontario; cooking, heating equipment, electrical equipment, cigarettes, candles, matches and lighters. Caledon Fire and Emergency Services would like to ensure all residents have working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan to ensure everyone gets out safely in the event of a fire in the home. "Public education, especially among children and seniors, is a key component to community fire safety," said Mayor Marolyn Morrison. "How the public uses that knowledge and responds to emergencies in their home or business is extremely important when it comes to fire prevention." Join the Town of Caledon firefighters and staff during Fire Prevention Week at the following open houses: • Oct. 4 — Pancake breakfast at Palgrave Fire Station from 8 a.m. to noon, with an auto extrication demonstration at 11. • Oct. 4 — Hot dog lunch at Caledon East Fire Station from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. • Oct. 11 — Open house at Bolton Fire Station from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. • Oct. 11 — Hot dog lunch at Cheltenham Fire Station from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. • Oct 18 — Pancake breakfast at Alton Fire Station from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Additional information on Fire Prevention Week is available by contacting Caledon's Fire and Emergency Services Department at (905) 584-2272, ext. 4331. |
