The Mayfield Mavericks' junior girls' rugby team just got better each game of the Barbarian Cup and took home the heralded championship at Fletcher's Field in Markham last Sunday (June 8).
After shutting out both their opponents in pool matchups, 12-0 against Oakville Trafalgar and 43-0 versus Trenton, the Mavs dominated again against Dunbarton in the finals, 40- 0.
"We set our goal this year to win the Barbarian Cup," explained Head Coach Kirk Robertson. "They have been working hard all season and that goal was accomplished."
"Our program has a solid foundation with a good strong core, as we continue to go along," he added.
With an abundance of tries scored, the Mavs had several key players in the finals and the entire Cup tournament.
Scrum-half Katie Prufer scored two of her three tries of the tournament in the finals. Fly-half Dakota Edwards was a strong leader and was rewarded the MVP in the finals.
The Mavs top scorer in the tournament was fullback and kicker Dana Jensen, with six tries. She was also a very accurate kicker with a number of converts on tries, as well as goal kicks.
Inside-centre Rebecca Muzos (three tries), eightman and team captain Cydney Cowperthwaite (two tries) and flanker Nancy Anselmi (two tries) all had tremendous Barbarian Cup showings.
Lock Genelle Rose went out with an injury in the finals, but was a key presence in getting her team into the championship game.
Since the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) doesn't sanction junior girls' rugby, the Barbarian Cup is a, Ontario Rugby recognized championship for the sport.
Robertson also thanks his assistant coaches, Daniel Maveneka and Arta Theophylactou (Mayfield teachers), as well as John Putty, who is a Caledon resident and former teacher at Mayfield. He has been coaching for 40 years.
"He's a tremendous community and school supporter for sports programs," said Robertson. "His whole life has been dedicated to being a great coach."
