South Regionals produce respective finishes and advancements for Caledon school athletes to OFSAA in Hamilton this weekend Caledon school track and field athletes have run, jumped and thrown a long way through the last couple of months. The South Regional Championships were in Hamilton at Mohawk Park May 29 and Mayfield, Humberview and Robert F. Hall Secondary School teams have been around the podiums every step of the way. Mayfield Mavericks The Mavericks had three individual athletes, as well as a relay team to advance to OFSAA, which is in Hamilton (Mohawk Park) this weekend (June 5 to 7). Track star Johnathan Settembri advanced to OFSAA after winning a gold medal in the midget boys' 800-metre (2:02.92) and silver in the midget 400- metre (53.12). Settembri also took home three medals at ROPSSAA (Centennial Park in Etobicoke May 6 and 7), with two gold in the 800- metre and 1,500-metre and a bronze in the 400-metre. Erin Brown had exciting races for the midget girls', as she came in eighth in the 800-metre and second in the 200-metre, which qualified her for this weekend. Brandie Wilkerson placed fourth in the junior girls' 300-metre hurdles at regionals, which also qualifies her for OFSAA. The senior girls' 4 x 100- metre relay team followed their silver medal ROPSSAA showing, with a fourth-place South Regional showing, qualifying them for Hamilton. The girls' team consists of Jeannette Goode, Sophie Gartner- Manson, Ritchea Hodge and Alex Anderson. Humberview Huskies Huskies have five track and field stars advancing to the OFSAA tournament, including Harry Gaebler in the discus throw. Grade 9 student Gaebler tossed 38.67 metres in the midget boys' discus to win a silver medal at the South Regionals. He bested his ROPSSAA (Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association) gold results of 35.83 metres. Amy Yorke didn't best her gold medal at ROPSSAA (32.62 metres), but managed a third-place finish with her 32.58-metre spearing in the senior girls' javelin event. Sophie MacRae won a bronze medal in the junior girls' high jump with a jump of 1.50 metres, while Taylor Brisebois placed fourth in the midget girls' high jump to qualify for OFSAA. In the senior girls' discus, Trish Shurrie won a bronze medal with a throw of 29.92 metres, which completes the Huskies OFSAA advances. Robert F. Hall Wolfpack Breanna Atkinson is at it again. The midget girls' hurdles star earned a gold in the 80-metre hurdles with a time of 12.96, as well as a fourth place finish in the 300-metre hurdles. She won two gold medals (80-metre and 300-metre hurdles) at ROPSSAA. Pauline Skowron also qualified for the junior girls' 3,000-metre run with her fourth-place finish at South Regionals. Brampton Christian Academy Caledon resident Sarah Krapez (Grade 10) is a double qualifier for OFSAA for junior girls' discus with a silver medalist throw of 27.72 metres and a javelin thirdplace result with a throw of 26.43 metres. Krapez, 16, won gold at ROPSSAA with a discus throw of 28.28 metres and a silver with her personal best javelin throw of 26.7 metres. |
