Bolton Wanderers celebrate 30th anniversary season
By Wally Mikulski BWSC Vice-president

From humble beginnings in 1978, with a little more than 125 participants, Bolton Wanderers have grown into one of the largest sports organizations in the Town of Caledon. This year marks the club's 30th anniversary season.

Over the years, operations have evolved to include a Valleywood (West Caledon) division, which holds its recreational season opening festivities the weekend of June 7 at Lina Marino Park. Together with the Bolton division, which holds its recreational season kick-off the weekend of June 21 at Edelweiss Park, the club totals well in excess of 3,100 participants, ranging in age from four to 70; all with the goal of enjoying the world's most popular sport.

"It is wonderful to have an organization that encourages an active lifestyle with a fun activity enjoyed by so many," stated the Caledon Chamber of Commerce. "We wish continued success to your organization."

The club's traditional opening weekend festivities will once again involve team photos, games, children's activities and a barbecue both Saturday and Sunday. Adding a little spark to the atmosphere of the Bolton division's opening weekend - June 21, will be music and a 30th Anniversary fireworks display.

In addition, the Wanderers have planned a variety of special programs this season. Details on recreational summer camps are now available on the club's Web site. The club's successful Master Mentor Coaches Program returns. Mentor coaches are highlevel senior Wanderers players trained to assist and run coaching sessions for recreational teams, not only helping raise the skill level of younger players, but recreational coaches as well, in turn laying the foundation for Bolton's future competitive teams.

"I would like to salute the coaches and volunteers over years who have motivated young people to perform to their highest potential, and instilled in them values of sportsmanship and fair play that will last a lifetime," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement. "On behalf of the government of Canada, please accept my best wishes for a memorable anniversary."

Soccerfest is a week-long celebration of the beautiful game in Caledon may prove to be highlight of the Wanderers' 30th Anniversary celebrations. It includes a five day camp for competitive players beginning July 7, and features amateur play at its highest level July 12, when the Wanderers, in conjunction with the Toronto Lynx, host three outstanding matches; the Super 20 Toronto Lynx Girls versus the Indiana Invaders; The Toronto Lady Lynx versus Western Mass Lady Pioneers; and the Toronto Lynx versus the Indiana Invaders. July 12's Soccerfest will also feature Bolton's under-4 and under- 6 players in mini-matches. Soccerfest ticket information is available from the club office and Web site - www.bwsc.ca

"It is a pleasure to recognize your thirty years as a sports organization providing opportunities for soccer enthusiasts," said Dufferin - Caledon MPP Silvia Jones. "The club's longevity in our community is a testament to all the coaches, volunteers, referees, and businesses who have supported so many players over the years."

With Mother Nature's cooperation, it promises to be eventful season with much to celebrate; including the efforts of those who make it happen - local sponsors, coaches, and a small legion of other volunteers who support the club by way of contributing countless hours in getting things ready. Yes, it's been a small group - hence, the Bolton Wanderers are placing a call for additional helping hands in a variety of areas. Please register on line with the club and get involved! Volunteer. And, together let's keep the ball rolling this 30th Anniversary Season and beyond. See you at the park.
