Seatbelts and child car seats save lives With the 2008 Spring Seatbelt Campaign approaching, Caledon OPP seatbelt enforcement checks will be highly visible throughout the town. The enforcement spot checks are to ensure that motorists everywhere do their part in saving lives by buckling up. Caledon OPP officers will also be focusing their efforts on child restraints during the campaign, to raise awareness and protect children. Infants - children weighing less than 9 kg. (20 pounds) are required to be in a rear-facing child seat. The child should be rear facing until the child is able to pull self to stand and is one year old. Some seats will go up to 16 kg. (35 pounds). Toddlers - those weighing between nine and 18 kg. (20 to 40 pounds), older than one year and who can stand on their own are required to be in a forward-facing car seat. This seat must be used with a tether strap and properly installed anchor. Pre-schoolers - children between 18 and 36 kg. (40 to 80 pounds) with a standing height of less than 145 cm (four feet nine inches) or maximum age of eight years are to be in a booster seat. Make sure you do your part as a driver, buckle up and ensure all your passen- gers are properly secured. |
