Many municipal employees made more than $100,000 last year

Despite the cracks that are sometimes made about public sectors employees, the fact is that for the most part, they do work hard in demanding jobs.

In fact, society as we know it could not run without them.

Another fact is they get paid well, especially if they've been on the job a long time and are in the upper echelons of their organization.

The provincial Finance Ministry last week released the list of public sector employees who made more than $100,000 last years, and has been the case in previous years, the list keeps on growing.

There were 11 members of Town of Caledon staff in the "century club" this year, and the highest paid among them was Treasurer, Director of Corporate Services and Deputy CAO Sam Jones, who earned $152,283.62, plus $4,216.40 in benefits.

The other Town employees who made more than $100,000 last year were Fire Chief Brad Bigrigg, who earned $109,837.32, plus $586.32 in benefits; Public Works and Engineering Director Craig Campbell - $118,867.28, plus $633.35; Recreation and Property Services Director Eglite Eriks - $114,289.21, plus $608; Planning Director Mary Hall - $114,862.01, plus $600.67; Director of Legal Services Nadia Koltun - $120,603.64, plus $642.58; Chief Librarian Bill Manson - $108,084.90, plus $577.82; Director of Human Resources Rebecca Moore- Whitsitt - $114,237.20, plus $607.64; former CAO Patrick Moyle - $126,263.44, plus $9,477.56; Towns Solicitor David Ostler - $115,900.33, plus $615.84; and Director of Building and Bylaw and Chief Building Official Mark Sraga - $118,867.25.

There were 270 members of the staff at Peel Region last year who made more than $100,000, including 161 employees of Peel Regional Police.

Regional Chair Emil Kolb was one of the top money earners, making a salary of $163,325.54, plus $4,484.23 in benefits. But he wasn't at the top of the list. That honour went to Regional CAO David Szwarc, who make $251,243.79, plus $16,539.92. Other top earners at the Regional office were Associate Medical Officer of Health Eileen De Villa - $190,576.84, plus $564.24; Commissioner of Corporate Services and Regional Solicitor Kent Gillespie - $182,929.62, plus $11,273.98; Commissioner of Finance and Treasurer Daniel Labrecque - $189,719.85, plus $12,380.03; Medical Officer of - Health David Mowat - $202,296.72, plus $8507.10; Commissioner of Employee and Business Services Laura Nashman - $169,411.14, plus $12,510.08; Executive Director of Environment, Transportation and Planning Services Nicholas Tunnacliffe - $182,929.62, plus $12,338.42; Commissioner of Human Services Keith Ward - $182,929.62; and Commissioner of Environment, Transportation and Planning Services Mitchell Zamojc - $182,929.62, plus $15,956.28.

The top three money earners with the Regional police service included Chief Michael Metcalf - $215,328.27, plus $3,960.98; Chief Administrative Officer of Policing Larry Button - $201,839.21, plus $11,384.62; and Associate Administrator Thomas Banks - $164,277.86, plus $14,193.81.

There were 253 members of the staff of the Peel District School Board who were over the $100,00 salary mark.

The top earner was Director of Education James Grieve, who made $221,418.53, plus $11,632.21 in benefits. He was followed by Associate Director of Operational Support Services Wayne McNally - $193,836.94, plus $775.25; Associate Director of Instructional and Support Services Judith Nyman - $185,365.96, plus $775.25; Superintendent of Education Susan Hiraishi - $156,223.18, plus $659.15; Superintendent of Education Shirley Ann Teal - $156,223.18, plus $659.15; Director of Communications and Strategic Partnerships Support Services Charles Wright- $156,223.02, plus $659.15; Superintendent of Education Leonard Kazlovskis - $153,566.33, plus $659.15; Superintendent of Education Pamela Tomasevic - $156,093.25, plus $659.15; Superintendent of Curriculum and Instructional Support Services Charles Waterman - $153,566.33, plus $659.15; and Controller of Learning Technology Support Services James Smith - $153,467.13, plus $659.15.

There were 215 employees of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board in th "century club."

Heading the list was Board Director Michael Bator, who earned $213,612.69, plus $3,905.50 in benefits.

He was followed by Director John Kostoff, who earned $180,684.80, plus $10,879.43 in benefits; Associate Director Ralph Borrelli - $165,698.91, plus $761.58; Superintendent John Fitzgibbon - $151,338.94, plus $638.99; Superintendent Elizabeth McGuire - $151,338.94, plus $700.74; Superintendent Sheila McWatters - $151,338.94, plus $700.74; Superintendent John Melito - $151,338.94, plus $700.74; Superintendent Vincent Nichilo - $151,338.99, plus $700.74; Superintendent Michael Prospero - $151,338.94, plus $57.24; Superintendent Elizabeth Kazimowicz - $149,659.95, plus $693.39; and Superintendent Marianne Mazzorato - $149,659.95, plus $693.39.
