Abandoned house burns near Snelgrove

An old, abandoned farmhouse on Kennedy Road, just north of Mayfield Road, was destroyed by fire Saturday evening.

Caledon Fire and Emergency Services reported they received the call at about 7:13 p.m., and crews from the station in Snelgrove responded. The house was completely involved with the fire by the time they arrived.

A tanker shuttle was also dispatched because the area is not served with fire hydrants. Crews from the Cheltenham, Inglewood, Caledon East and Bolton Fire Stations responded too, as well as Peel EMS and Caledon OPP.

A defensive fire attack was started by the crews. They weren't able to enter the house safely due to the advanced stage of the fire. There were also a number of safety issues around the house, including an open cistern and a damaged chimney.

The property is known locally as the Snell farmhouse and has been abandoned and vacant for the last three years.

The building was a total loss. The fire department estimated damage at $10,000. The cause is still under investigation.

There were no injuries.
