Town advises motorists to drive with caution during spring thaw The Town of Caledon's Public Works and Engineering Department advises drivers to show extra caution while travelling on roads during the spring thaw. Fall 2007 experienced above-average precipitation, creating saturated soils and high water tables in many areas. This past winter has had below-average temperatures for extended periods plus several freeze/thaw cycles. This combination has caused deep frost penetration within roadways, and it is anticipated that the spring break-up this year will be very hard on the condition of the roads. Drivers are urged to show extra caution during the spring thaw, as potholes can appear very quickly, literally overnight, and even between the morning and evening commutes. Soft surfaces occur on gravel roads during a spring thaw - as such, Town staff suggest drivers utilize the paved road systems as much as possible. "Our staff in the Public Works and Engineering Department work diligently to ensure that Town roads meet or exceed the minimum maintenance standards as established by the Province of Ontario," commented Mayor Marolyn Morrison. Town staff encourage all drivers to report pothole locations to the Public Works and Engineering Department at (905) 584- 2272, ext. 4238 or public.works@caledon.ca |
