Minor bantam Hawks win first game in play-off round robin

The Caledon Blackhawks minor bantam Selects engaged the Caledon Lightning in inter-city play Feb. 16.

The Lightning played a defensive game to counter a run and gun Blackhawks team looking to win their first playoff game of the round robin schedule.

The Blackhawks defeated the Lightning 2-0 in the highly contested match.

An aggressive Blackhawk team carried the play to Lighting goalie John Washington, testing him frequently. Hard forechecking by Blackhawk forwards Lucas D'Acri, Matteo Palombi, Cory Graham and Mathew Nespolo kept the Lightning off balance during the game. The Blackhawks' short passing game created odd man rushes and scoring chances around the Lightning net throughout the game. Solid goaltending by Washington kept the game close throughout.

Lightning counter attacks where blocked, poke checked and swept away by defencemen Philip DeFrancesco, Mitchell Shepphard, Adam Badner, Alex Cammarota, Micheal Rybka and Iain Wong. Steady goaltending by Blackhawks Simon Serpe (in the first half) and Drew Eden (second half) earned the shutout.

Blackhawks' Lucus Trevisan opened the scoring when he snared a loose puck behind the Lightning net and scored a wrap around goal at 5:03 of the second period. He was assisted by Zachory Worth and Trevor Moore. Daniel Cafagna's rising wrist shot scored Blackhawks' second and final goal of the game at with a minute left in the second period. It was assisted by Trevisan and Defrancesco.

Great efforts were given by both teams and the excitement was enjoyed by all in attendance.
