Mayfield Secondary School, Humberview Secondary School and Robert F. Hall Secondary School have all been in action, as some teams have performed at different Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) and Ontario Federation of Secondary Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournaments. Mayfield Mavericks The Mavericks have had the busiest athletes of the three schools with teams playing in several tournaments. The varsity girl's hockey tier 1 ROPSSAA finals were Wednesday, as the girls took on Loyola SS at Iceland Arena in Mississauga. The ladies (7-1-2) defeated Turner Fenton SS 3-1 in the semi-finals Feb. 27 to advance to the finals. The senior boys' hockey tier 1 ROPSSAA finals were also Wednesday, as they faced Our Lady of Mount Carmel SS at the Power Aid Centre in Brampton. Results were unknown of both games as of press time. In the semi-finals Mayfield (15-2-1) defeated St. Aloysius Gonzaga SS, 3-2, in an intense shootout. Chad Cummings notched the winner for the Mavs and Jared Lockhurst played brilliantly in net, as he has all season (five shutouts in his 15 games). The tall junior girls volleyball team (8-0) captured the single tier ROPSSAA championship, as they were able to stop Phillip Pocock Catholic SS's attack, by defeating them two games to none (25-17, 25-18) at Lorne Park SS Feb. 22. There is no junior girls OFSAA tournament. The girls also won both Peel tournaments they attended this year, which were at Brampton Centennial and Mayfield. Winning ways continue for the senior girls' team as well, as they won their fourth straight single tier ROPSSAA title outmatching John Fraser SS. They will now be making their fourth trip to OFSAA, this week at Centennial College as well as a high school in that area. They are ranked seventh out of 16 teams at OFSAA. This powerhouse senior volleyball team went undefeated during season play (8-0) and won tournaments at Michael Power CI and St. Marguerite d'Youville SS. The Mayfield alpine ski team traveled to Blue Mountain to compete in the 2008 OFSAA championship Feb. 25 and 26. The team competed well over these two days of racing, resulting in the level 2 girls' team of Ashley Burnie, Nicole Lively, Kate Wortley and Erin Rinaldi earning two medals; a bronze in the giant slalom and a silver in the slalom. The level 2 boys; team of Matthew Burnie, Matthew Wortley, Nick Schwass and Gavin Pearson also didn't disappoint by placing eighth in the giant slalom. On the individual side, Burnie's solid performance on the hill resulted in a fourth place finish (time of 81:05) in the slalom and fifth (90:88) in the giant slalom. Both girls' and boys' level 2 teams also finished first overall at the ROPSSAA Championship Feb. 13 to earn a spot at OFSAA. Mayfield also had teams represented at the OFSAA Nordic Championships in North Bay Feb. 27-29. The Mavs team had 37 athletes compete as the team finished second overall in the province. Humberview Huskies Humberview's Nordic ski team also participated at OFSAA, where they finished seventh overall in the long course event. On a very treacherous and icy relay race course, the Huskies managed their best OFSAA relay finish in Humberview Nordic history by placing in fourth. The team says goodbye to graduating skiers of Mary Qiu and Candace Ball, who finished their high school Nordic skiing careers on a high. Humberview's senior boys' hockey team lost 4-0 against St. Paul Catholic HS in the ROPSSAA tier 2 quarter finals last Thursday (Feb. 28). The boys had a strong season with an 11-4-1 record.
