Mayor's Report
Mr. Alex Raeburn was honoured by the Lieutenant Governor for his outstanding commitment and extraordinary contribution to community heritage activities. Last Thursday afternoon, Alex's son and I drove down to Queen's Park for Alex to be awarded the Ontario Heritage Award for Lifetime Achievement. The Caledon Heritage Committee presented Alex with a regal boutonniere to wear during the awards presentation. Many residents throughout Caledon will have had the pleasure of meeting Alex through his many community involvements. He is the descendant of early settlers in the former Caledon Township and he has worked diligently to preserve our cultural heritage. Alex has served on the Region of Peel Heritage Complex Board, the Ontario Heritage Foundation and the Niagara Escarpment Commission. Alex has also contributed to our community by serving as a member of council for two consecutive terms, commencing in 1974. Council formally endorsed Alex for the nomination of this award and we could not be more pleased that the province chose to honour him for his many contributions. The week prior to Alex's award presentation, I had the honour of attending a special ceremony for Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion. In recognition of Mayor McCallion's many years of public service, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing named the main boardroom at the Ministry in her honour. This boardroom is used by the minister to meet with municipalities and stakeholders from all across Ontario. It is very fitting that this boardroom be named in her honour as the longest serving mayor in Ontario. Each municipality that meets with the minister in that room will be reminded of Mayor McCallion's contributions to the City of Mississauga, the Region of Peel and the province. It is fitting that I mention both of these accomplishments, as Alex Raeburn and Mayor McCallion have served together at the Region of Peel. The Region of Peel has many great residents to be proud of and I am so pleased that these two have been recognized by the province for their efforts. It is important to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of residents who often give of their time to make our community the best place to live, work and raise a family. Please join me in congratulating both Alex Raeburn and Mayor McCallion. |
