Police warn against schemes and scams Caledon OPP has in the past advised of e-mail scams and phone fraud schemes. The schemes and scams come in a variety of gimmicks and tricks, but they all have the same purpose and that is to trick people out of personal information, banking information or cash. A recent investigation revealed a job scam in which the victim applied for a job through a popular on-line workadvertising site. The work involved receiving cheques in the mail that were to be deposited in the workers personal account and then the funds forwarded to a third party. After several months, several cheques cleared the bank, however many did not. Police advice if it seems to good to be true, it probably is. Everyone should be aware, be cautious and make informed decisions. If you are unsure, consult banking authorities or police. It is hoped that through education and awareness, people will be able to identify e-mail frauds, telephone frauds and door-to-door scams before they become the next victim. |
