Large metal appliances will be collected by appointment

Caledon residents can have their discarded large metal appliances and fixtures collected every other Tuesday by appointment.

The change will occur for residents who schedule their pick-up appointments after Jan. 25, 2008 at noon. The first collection day will be Feb. 12. Pick-up appointments scheduled prior to Jan. 25 will be collected on regular collection days during the week of Jan. 28.

Currently, large metal appliances and fixtures are collected every other week on residents' scheduled waste collection days by appointment.

"Changing the collection schedule to every other Tuesday will improve collection efficiency and is better for the environment," commented Ben Shepherd, manager of waste collections and processing for Peel Region. "The change will allow our collection contractor, Sandhill Disposal and Recycling, to create an efficient collection route for their collection vehicles. Also, three fewer collection days every two weeks will reduce vehicle emissions and improve aesthetics at the curb."

Large metal appliances and fixtures are collected from the curb by appointment only; the cost is $15 for the first item and $10 for each additional item collected the same day.

Booking an

appointment

To book an appointment on-line, visit www.peelregion.ca/waste. Payments are made securely using VISA or MasterCard.

To book an appointment over the telephone, call the Region at (905) 791-9499 or (905) 584-2216 in longdistance areas. VISA or MasterCard is required. To pay by debit card, cash or cheque, visit Access Peel at 10 Peel Centre Dr. in Brampton. Cheques payable to the Region of Peel are also accepted at the Caledon Town Hall.

Residents can also drop off large metal appliances and fixtures, free of charge, at any of Peel's Community Recycling Centres. Metal appliances and fixtures that are acceptable for curbside pick-up include air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, empty hot water tanks, empty heating oil tanks (cut in half), metal fireplaces, furnaces, heat pumps/exchangers, large home safes, metal bathtubs, metal shower enclosures, pool heaters/pumps/metal filters, stoves, washers and dryers and water coolers

For safety reasons, residents must remove appliance doors and place them beside the appliance. Taping or tying the door shut is not an acceptable alternative to door removal. Appliances and fixtures must also be empty of all food and other waste, or they will not be collected.
