Town offering trees, shrubs and seedlings

The Town of Caledon, in association with the Halton Peel Woodlands and Wildlife Stewardship, is offering a native tree/shrub seedling program to landowners interested in reforesting their properties.

The aim of the program is to promote and encourage private reforestation efforts by making affordable native nursery stock accessible to local residents whom own at least half a hectare (1.2 acres).

The tree seedling program offers both coniferous and deciduous tree seedlings, as well as wildlife shrubs. A minimum order of 50 conifer seedlings and/or five deciduous trees or 10 shrubs is required. Applications that do not meet these requirements cannot be met.

Trees are available on a first-come basis.

The deadline for tree seedling orders is this Friday (Feb. 29). Stock will be available for pickup between 8 a.m. and noon April 26.

There will also be a free tree seedling care and planting workshop at the Caledon Community Complex March 29. Learn how to successfully plant and care for your tree saplings to keep them healthy and growing strong.

Workshop presentation topics include: Site requirements of trees to be planted; how to care for and plant your trees; postplanting tree care; and insects and diseases that can affect your planted trees.

Pre-registration is required for the workshop. To register or for more information, contact Greg Bales, Halton Peel Woodlands and Wildlife Stewardship Coordinator, at (905) 713-7410, or at greg.bales@ontario.ca
