It's official - Caledon has its own frequency on the airwaves.
Last Wednesday, Radio Caledon, consisting of 105.5 FM (The "B" in Bolton), and 102.7 FM Caledon Information Radio in Caledon East, was formally launched.
Though the stations have been on air since the start of 2008, owners Shelly and Rick Sargent invited local politicians and dignitaries to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate Radio Caledon.
While Caledon Information Radio broadcasts public information announcements, including breaking news, traffic updates, local weather and bus cancellations, the "B" also offers an "eclectic mix of music," said president Rick Sargent. The music is interspersed with public information announcements.
The Sargents both have extensive experience in radio. Mr. Sargent has 22 years technical radio and broadcasting experience, and Mrs. Sargent has a background in radio advertising and marketing.
The idea for Radio Caledon began taking shape when the Sargents moved to Caledon and noticed the town's void on the radio. The couple began talking about launching a Caledon station, and when Mrs. Sargent told her husband "make it happen," he began working on the application.
"It was a lengthy application process," he said. But with testing phases and initial glitches behind them, the couple is now looking to expand programming.
From the station's early days on air, musicians and people interested in broadcasting have been contacting the station.
By spring, the "B" will launch a series of radio shows, said Mrs. Sargent. A music show, featuring local indie (independent) artists, will be hosted by Palgrave resident Celeste Zugec, who has extensive experience in music production. A local sports show is pending.
