Caledon minor bantam Selects win Agincourt Tournament

The Caledon Blackhawks 94 Selects overcame a slow start, penalty woes and competitive teams during three days of fiercely contested hockey to win the Agincourt Lions Hockey Tournament Jan. 20.

Strong fundamental hockey skills anchored by outstanding teamwork and great coaching lead the minor bantam Blackhawk team to victory.

Game 1 Caledon Blackhawks 3,

Brampton Bombers 2

Aggressive Bomber play kept the Blackhawk team on their heels for much of the first period. Goalie Simon Serpe was tested frequently throughout the period.

The Bombers opened the scoring when a point shot beat a screened Serpe.

Second period action saw a determined Blackhawk team finding their skating legs to match the Bombers play for play. Blackhawks' Lucas Trevisan evened the score in the middle of the period by tapping in a loose puck, assisted by Daniel Cafagna. The Blackhawks took the lead when Matteo Palombi fired a bullet shot under the crossbar to close the first period. The Bombers tied the game early in the third with a quick shot from the slot handcuffing goalie Drew Eden. The Blackhawks' Cafagna converted a Trevisan pass to score the winning goal.

Game 2 Caledon Blackhawks 2,

Credit Valley Wolves 3

The Wolves attacked the Blackhawk goal, peppering shots at Serpe from the drop of the puck. Their hard work produced the first goal of the game at the 8:37 mark of the first period. Blackhawks' Zackory Worth replied with a quick shot from the high slot to score the tying goal at 1:18 of the period.

The second period began with Blackhawks' Lucas D'Acri tipping in a goal mouth pass from Worth and Adam Badner. Second period penalties turned the tide, with the Wolves scoring a pair of power-play goals to lead the game 3-2. Third period action saw the Wolves holding off Blackhawks advances to win the game.

Oshawa Selects 0

The Blackhawks played Oshawa with intensity and determination.

An aggressive forecheck smothered Oshawa at both ends of the rink for much of the game. Any Oshawa opportunities were met by a swarming defencemen, back-checking forwards and perfect goaltending. Oshawa was simply out hustled, outplayed and outscored by a Blackhawk team, committed to winning this game.

The Blackhawks collected four goals from Trevisan, and singles from Cory Graham, Worth and Cafagna. Cafagna had three assists, while Lucas D'Acri and Trevor Moore had two apiece and Trevisan and Alex Cammerota each collected one.

Semi-final game Caledon Blackhawks 3,

Oshawa 2

The Oshawa Selects were prepared for this rematch, and it required a cohesive team effort by the Blackhawks to secure a victory.

Both teams took turns rushing the puck end-to-end, finishing with quality scoring chances. The Blackhawk goalie tandem of Serpe and Eden saved the day on more than one occasion.

Oshawa's relentless attack opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 4:52 of the first period. The Blackhawks responded early in the second with two identical (behind the net pass) goals from Cafagna, assisted by Mathew Nespolo and Alex Cammerota, and Moore, assisted by Cafagna and Trevisan. The Blackhawks closed the period with their third goal coming on the power-play, after a Moore redirect of a point shot, assisted by Trevisan and Cammerota. The Blackhawks went into a defensive shell to protect their lead throughout the third period. Great team defence held Oshawa Selects to a single goal, resulting in Caledon winning the game.

Championship game Caledon Blackhawks 5,

Brampton Bombers 3

The championship game was an all-Peel final against the Brampton Bombers.

Both teams are well acquainted through intercity matches.

The Bombers played a strong first period, testing the Blackhawks' goalie frequently. Team speed, back checking forwards, aggressive defencemen, solid goaltending and team work, team work and team work was required to win this game.

The Blackhawks took the early lead when Trevisan scored on a solo rush at 9:17 of the first period. The Bombers answered back with two identical end-toend rushes, scoring two goals to end the first period leading 2-1. A determined Blackhawk team would not be denied, and stormed back, scoring three goals in the last three minutes of the second period taking command of the game with a 4-1 lead. Blackhawk goals were by Iain Wong, assisted by Cafagna, and Palombi, assisted by Graham, Cammerota and Trevisan, assisted by D'Acri. Both teams played the third period pulling out all the stops to win the game. The run and gun play by both teams turned up the excitement throughout the third period. Goalies at both ends of the rink had to be sharp and focused. The Blackhawks' final goal of the game by Trevisan, assisted by Wong at the 3:40 mark ensured the victory.

The Bombers pulled their goalie in favor of a sixth attacker, and scored the last goal of the game.
