Police will hold seminar to help retailers prevent robberies

Caledon OPP reports they responded to 37 property damage and six personal injury traffic collisions during the week ending Monday.

The Crime Prevention Sub-committee of the Policing Advisory Council of Caledon, in co-operation with Caledon OPP, is hosting a robbery prevention seminar for retailers.

It will be March 6 in the auditorium of the Albion- Bolton Community Centre. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. with coffee served, and the seminar will run from 8 until 9:30 a.m.

The topics it will cover include: • What is a robbery? • Preventive measures - how can you avoid being a victim of robbery. • What to do during a robbery - to reduce the risk of possible injury. • What to do after a robbery - to be able to work effectively with police investigators.

Each participant will also receive a robbery prevention kit, which will include: • A pamphlet on tips for retailers before, during and after a robbery. • Quick fill-in chart to assist with suspect, vehicle and weapon identification information. • OPP dispatch stickers to be placed near or on business phones. • Pre-pasted measuring tapes. • Decal stating "Robbery Prevention Program in Effect."

Assault

A Jan. 24 verbal dispute turned physical at a business on Highway 10, near Orangeville. A 40-year-old man from Orangeville was charged with assault and uttering threats. He will appear in court Feb. 28.

Drugs

An 18-year-old Caledon man was charged with possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) following a Jan. 21 vehicle check at Queensgate Boulevard and Highway 50 in Bolton. He will appear in court Feb. 25.

Mischief

Police report a window was damaged at a home under construction on Mabee Drive in Caledon Jan. 21. They said it looked like the damage may have been caused when someone was trying to break-in. No entry was made.

Two unlocked vehicles parked at a Shaws Creek Road address were entered during the night hours of Jan. 22. Nothing of value was taken.

Stolen or recovered

A utility trailer was reported stolen from a fenced yard on Nixon Road in Bolton Jan. 21. It contained tools and had been locked at the time.

A vehicle that had been reported stolen from Brampton was located abandoned in a parking lot on Regional Road 50, north of Mayfield Road Jan. 23. No major damage was caused to the vehicle.

A utility trailer was stolen from a Holland Drive business location during the night hours of Jan. 24.

Avehicle was stolen from the driveway of a Heart Lake Road residence Jan. 26 during the night hours.

Theft

An attempt was made to steal a vehicle that had been parked at a Marconi Court address in Bolton Jan. 21. The door lock had been tampered with and the ignition had been punched. The thief was not able to take the vehicle, but did steal tools that were within the vehicle.

Two vehicles were entered during the night hours of Jan. 23 while parked at a Willoughby Sideroad address. Change was reported missing from one of them.

A laptop computer was reported stolen from Robert F. Hall Secondary School in Caledon East. The theft occurred the evening of Jan. 22, at about 7:30 p.m. and was caught on video. Anyone with information on this theft is asked to contact Constable Bucknor at (905) 584-2241 or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

During the night of Jan. 25, a chain saw was stolen from the back of a truck parked in a McCabe Crescent driveway. That same night, a vehicle was entered while parked at another McCabe address. Change, sunglasses and a multi tool have been reported stolen from that vehicle. Vehicles parked on Taylorwood Avenue in Bolton were also broken into. A DVD player was stolen from a vehicle parked on Knoll Haven Circle.

Other criminal

A Caledon OPP officer observed a vehicle hit another while travelling on Airport Road near Walker Road in Caledon East Jan. 21. The vehicle did not stop at the scene of the collision, but continued northbound on Airport Road. The officer followed and was able to pull the vehicle over north of the collision scene. A 69- year-old man from Collingwood was charged with failing to remain at the scene of accident and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He has been given a court date of Feb. 28.

A Jan. 23 Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) spot check on Main Street and Queen Street in Alton resulted in criminal charges of driving while disqualified for a 44-year-old man from Orangeville. Acourt date has been set for Feb. 28.

A truck driver stopped for a commercial motor vehicle check on Highway 10 near King Street, was subsequently charged with the criminal charge of driving while disqualified Jan. 25. The 26- year-old Orangeville man has been given a court date of Feb. 21.
