Man shot by police is charged

Caledon OPP have charged a Caledon man in connections with Dec. 23 incident in which an officer had to fire his pistol.

Gregory Svrklys, 41, of Caledon, was charged with two counts of possession of weapons for dangerous purposes, two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of uttering threats, following an investigation into the altercation with officers in Bolton.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. officers responded to reports of an erratic male on the roadway in the area of Queen Street in Bolton. Police located the male, later identified as Svrklys, in front of a plaza at 364 Queen St. South.

Police reported that when he was approached, he continued to act in an erratic manner, produced a weapon in a threatening gesture, fled on foot for a short distance before turning towards police and lunging towards the officers with his weapon. As a result, an officer discharged his pistol and Svrklys received a single gunshot wound.

Svrklys was transported to hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening injury and ultimately released. The province's Special Investigation Unit responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and issued a media release on January 10, 2008 advising that their investigation was closed with no further action.

Svrklys is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice later this week.
