Police advise full headlight package when visibility is poor

Traffic

Caledon OPP officers responded to 31 property damage and two personal injury collisions during the seven-day period ending Monday (Jan. 21). One of those incidents was a fatal collision, claiming two young lives.

Sufficient lighting

required

With weather temperatures rising and falling at the rate seen over the past several weeks, there will also be sudden changes in the atmospheric conditions. All drivers should be aware that daytime running lights that operate when the vehicle is turned on are not sufficient in such conditions.

The Highway Traffic Act states that lights are to be turned on for all motor vehicles, at least 30 minutes before sunset until 30 minutes after sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavourable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly visible at a distance of 150 metres or less.

Motorists should also be aware that when daytime running lights are on, in some vehicles dash lights might also be operational but this does not extend to taillights. In foggy conditions, it is imperative that the vehicle's taillights be turned on.

A good suggestion might be to get in the habit of always driving with fulllighting system on whether it is dawn, day, evening or night.

Break and enter

A home on Heart Lake Road was reported broken into Jan. 18, during the evening hours when no one was there. Electronic equipment was reported stolen from the home.

During the night hours Jan. 19, a business on Creditview Road in Cheltenham was broken into. Culprit(s) caused damage to the front door by prying it open. Snack food was taken from the shelves and left on the floor in the store when the culprit(s) fled.
