Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School had a parent information night last Wednesday.
The aim was to inform parents of Grade 8 students planning to attend next year what high school is like, as well as discuss what the curriculum mandate would be for their children with the school's guidance councillors.
"I talked about the ministry requirements for Grade 9, including volunteer hours, the mandatory literacy course," said John Ouellette, one of the school's guidance councillors. "It's also a perfect opportunity to talk about the school and why we think it's such a great place, from everything from the sports to clubs, drama, the art program and music program."
Ouellette said typically the school gets 800 parents who have various questions. For many of them, it is the first time they are sending a child to high school and they need to feel relaxed and confident that Robert F. Hall is a good place for their kids.
Members of the peer mentor program, which consists of Grade 11 and 12 students, were also at the information night, telling about Grade 9 orientation, which they organize, as well as other events throughout the school year.
"Our main event is the orientation at the beginning of the year so the Grade 9's get to know the school before they come," said core mentor and Grade 12 student Andrew Svarc.
