Additional signs, but no speed cuts on Old School Road

Caledon council recently approved public works and engineering staff recommendations not to lower the speed limit on Old School Road.

Staff began an investigation after council received a petition from residents of Old School Road requesting the speed limit on the road between Chinguacousy Road and Creditview Road be reduced from the current un-posted 80 km/h to 50 km/h.

Staff recommended no change after reviewing physical characteristics, roadway geometrics, accident history, adjacent land uses, entrance density and traffic behaviour.

The staff report stated that after reviewing these conditions, "it could not find reason to reduce the speed limit on Old School Road."

The report did recommend adding new warning and regulatory signs. These included the installation of No Heavy Truck signs at the intersection of Winston Churchill Boulevard and the attachment of small 70 km/h signs to the "horizontal curves ahead" warning signs.

The cost to purchase and install approximately 11 signs, associated posts and hardware is estimated at $700. Staff said the cost would be covered in the 2008 operational budget.

"The new signs will positively influence driver behaviour resulting in improved road safety on these road sections," the report stated.
