Only half the 9-1-1 calls in Peel are emergencies
False alarms

In 2006, emergency communicators in Peel Region handled 265,480 emergency calls; half of which turned out to be non-emergencies.

During Peel's 9-1-1 Awareness Week last week, residents were educated and reminded about when and how to use the 9-1-1 system.

"Every time an emergency communicator handles a non-emergency call, they are unavailable to help someone who really needs fire, police or paramedic services," observed Regional Chair Emil Kolb.

An emergency is a situation that requires immediate assistance for serious health crises, fires, crimes in progress and other incidents when life or property is at risk.

"Residents should not be calling 9-1-1 if they're in a minor fender bender," remarked Mayor Marolyn Morrison, vice-chair of the emergency protective services committee of Regional council. "Residents can learn more about 9-1- 1 by visiting the Region's Web site or picking up a brochure at town and city halls, or at Regional headquarters at 10 Peel Centre Dr. in Brampton."
