on fleeing ATV suspect

A Caledon OPP officer observed a four-wheel ATV exit a service station on Queen Street in Alton traveling westbound at about 5:50 p.m. Nov. 24. The officer attempted to stop the ATV by activating his cruiser's emergency equipment.

The driver of the ATV looked back at the officer and then accelerated westbound on Queen Street at a high rate of speed. It quickly turned southbound on Agnes Street, where it pulled into a private driveway. When the officer pulled into the driveway the ATV driver quickly spun around the machine and fled south on Agnes.

The officer terminated his attempt to stop the vehicle, but has been continuing his investigation to identify the driver, who is described as a white male, approximately 19 or 20 years of age, with long brown hair, clean shaven, five feet 10 inches in height with a slim build and possibly a resident of Alton.

Police are requesting anyone who might be able to supply information regarding this driver to call Constable MacPhail at (905) 584-2241.

Caledon OPP would like to remind All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riders that as of August 2003, regulations in the Highway Traffic Act (Ontario Regulation 316/3) took effect, and they are no longer permitted on roadways and shoulders. Section 191.8(1) of the Highway Traffic Act states, "No person shall drive an off-road vehicle on a highway except in accordance with the regulations and any applicable municipal bylaws."

The changed legislation permitted municipalities to pass bylaws pertaining to the use of all terrain vehicles on their roadways. In the Town of Caledon, there are no bylaws that allow operation of All Terrain Vehicles on the roadways. Regarding snowmobiles, Section 5(1) of the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act states, "No person shall drive a motorized snow vehicle upon the serviced roadway of the King's Highway or of a secondary highway except to cross."
