Public allowed to record council meetings
By Alan Liczyk Staff Reporter

Electronic recording of Caledon council meetings by any member of the public will be allowed from now on without restriction.

Council directed staff at its Dec. 18 meeting to draft a bylaw to this effect.

Council's decision will be consistent with the positions of Brampton, Mississauga and Peel councils which have no regulations regarding electronic recording. It will also meet the requirements of Bill 130 which wants municipalities to be transparent and accountable in its actions.

Councillor Annette Groves said she has no objection to the recording of meetings since they hold public office.

Councillor Richard Whitehead noted Bill 130 seeks openness and accountability. He applauded the further openness of government.

Councillor Jason Payne also favoured transparency in government.

"We shouldn't be hiding behind anything," he said.
