Caledon peewee AE Hawks win gold in Stoney Creek
They got off to a rough start early Friday morning, losing in overtime to the Waterloo Timberwolves. The Hawks bounced back, winning the next five games straight. Games against Oshawa and St. Thomas were shut outs for goalies Max Hussey and Brandon Frail, with scores of 4-0 and 9-0. The Hawks beat Cambridge in a fast paced 2-1 battle, moving into the semi-final round against Fort Erie Meteors. The team scored early in the first and secured it with two more goals in the second, only to have penalties in the third give the Meteors a chance to break the shut out with five minutes remaining. Fort Erie scored a second goal during a five-on-three power play, bringing the score to 3-2. Caledon managed to keep the Meteors away from the net, winning the semi-finals to face the Buffalo Regals in the finals. The Regals started with a goal in the first, but the Hawks were undaunted, tying it up early in the second with admirable teamwork. Buffalo snuck in one more goal, but Caledon came back right at the end of the second period to tie it up. The Hawks put the winning goal in, early in the third and shut Buffalo down for the rest of the period. In league play, the Hawks have been equally successful in December with three wins and a tie. Dec. 2, Caledon faced the Ancaster Avalanche, where Mitchell Bulloch scored early, assisted by Matthew Mijackovic, Corey French, and Tyler Schuster. French put in the next two goals with help from Bulloch and Marco Olivieri. Then Matthew Bartling wrapped it up with two goals off Austin Pugliese, Andrew Zunic, Jonas Cadham, and Justin Core to win the game 5-3. Dec. 5, they played in Elora, dominating the Lightning in a 6-1 victory. Scoring didn't start until the second, but then it came fast and furious, with goals by Bulloch off French, followed by three goals by Mijackovic, the first from Core, second from French, and the third off Zunic from French. The third period saw Pugliese score from Power and Gordon, and French wrapping the game up with a solo. The team continued their road tour with a game in Arthur against the Vipers Dec. 14. This game gave the team's strong defensive players a chance to step it up with some impressive performances in the Vipers' end. The first period had French scoring from Mijackovic and Schuster; Gordon off Pugliese, and French again assisted by Zunic. The second period started with a great goal by Christopher Ferguson, from Olivieri and goalie, Brandon Frail, but the Vipers shut things down until the third when the Hawks burst out with Andrew Tee scoring from Cadham and Power, Gordon from Tee and Pugliese; Bartling from Core and Schuster; Cadham off Pugliese and Core; and Power hammering one in from Zunic and Andrew Ferguson to end it 9-1. The last game in this away series was a tough-fought battle against the local rivals Brampton Battalion. The road-weary Hawks fell behind in the opening period, being out shot 6-2, and outscored 1-0, but the team regrouped and came out strong in the second. They tied it up when Cadham put one in off Mijackovic and Olivieri, only to fall behind again. Undaunted, the Hawks poured it on in the third, with one by Pugliese from Gordon, and the go ahead goal by Mijackovic off French. Bulloch put a fourth one in from Cadham and French, but the Battalion came back with two of their own to tie the game 4-4. The PeeWee AE Hawks continue to play as a strong team proudly representing Caledon. They were back at home for a game Friday (results not known at press time), then off to the Silver Stick in Alliston, where they'll be the team to watch. |
