Development freeze will hurt business Chamber says
By ALAN LICZYK Staff Reporter

The Caledon Chamber of Commerce was back at the Town council table last Tuesday, urging councillors not to halt development in south Albion-Bolton.

Charles Bristoll, chair of the Chamber's board of directors, told council the Chamber believes Official Plan Amendment 203 has been poorly communicated. OPA 203 proposes a 2031 population forecast of 108,000.

He added a development freeze up to 2021 will hurt the bottom lines for businesses and their ability to grow.

He noted most council members have shared their concerns. He believes there should be conclusive evidence of no negative impact.

Bristoll also questioned why the Town uses the same consultant and suggested maybe it's time to engage a new consultant.

He also stressed the Chamber fully supports the development of Mayfield West.

Councillor Doug Beffort said he doesn't think they've stopped the discussion on growth in south Albion.

"You are an important part of the community," said Councillor Annette Groves. "We're working towards the same goal."

"We absolutely want to work together," Bristoll said. "We're lovers not fighters."

Councillor Allan Thompson observed there's been a lot of negatives expressed on this issue.

"Let's bury it and move on," he said.

Beffort said if there's no disagreement, there's no need for a council. He wants to see a focus for all-over- Caledon shopping, not just Bolton.

Councillor Richard Whitehead commented it's the Chamber's role to advocate for business and the economy, adding it's done an excellent job.

He pointed out many businesses are hanging by a shoestring.

"Thank you for continuing to push the issue," he said.

Councillor Nick deBoer said council does have a role supporting the businesses. He added all businesses are going to find it tough for a number of years.

Councillor Gord McClure said he thought the Chamber represented all of Caledon and he wants to work with them as well.

Mayor Marolyn Morrison said they need to get residents to understand they have to support local businesses and spend their dollars locally.
