Pinwheels for Peace at Caledon Central Public School
By Amanda Hodge

The students at Caledon Central School marked Remembrance Day this year by creating a school-wide display of Pinwheels for Peace. The goal of the project is to help students make a public, visual statement about war, peace, tolerance, co-operation, harmony and unity.

Each student used a paper template to create a pinwheel with a message of peace on one side and a colourful decoration on the other. After a multimedia assembly in the gym, marked by songs and readings about peace, the student body went out and planted the pinwheels at the front of the school in the shape of a cross. It is hoped that the spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread the peaceful thoughts of Caledon Central students around the world. At the end of the day, the pinwheels were collected and are being sent to Canadian Peacekeepers in Afghanistan thanks to the efforts of our local MP, David Tilson.

The staff and students would like to thank Martin and Joanne Woudenberg of Orangeville Flowers and Greenhouses Ltd. for supplying the school with 650 plastic picks to use as the stems of the pinwheels. For more on the Pinwheels for Peace project visit http://pinwheelsforpeace.co m.
