OPP to monitor, enforce rules in school zones

Traffic

Caledon OPP officers responded to 37 property damage and three personal injury collisions during the week ending Nov. 13.

OPP charged three drivers under Section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (street racing).

Caledon OPP Community Response Unit officers will be focusing their efforts at least one day a week at the Caledon area schools for the next several weeks.

A traffic enforcement project has been initiated by the unit, designed to educate drivers and pedestrians about the rules of the road when travelling through or near school zones. The officers will educate drivers and pedestrians of their legal responsibilities such as stopping for school buses, crossing at designated areas and obeying the instructions of a crossing guard, thereby reducing the potential for a collision resulting in serious bodily harm or the death of a school-aged child. The education for the drivers and pedestrians could be in the form of a police warning for a minor infraction or for infractions that demonstrate a more blatant disregard for public safety; a charge under the Highway Traffic Act would be laid.
