Caledon Parent-Child Centre celebrates its 20th anniversary

The Caledon Parent-Child Centre/Ontario Early Years Centre (CPCC/OEYC) will celebrate their 20th anniversary Tuesday, Nov. 27. This grass roots organization began its humble beginnings in response to a tragedy that claimed the life of a caregiver and the children in her care. An inquest later revealed that there were insufficient support services for those caring for young children in Caledon.

Co-founder Leanne Flood recalls; "When the doors of the centre first opened in November of 1987, we were unsure of just how this fledgling organization would be received in Caledon. Up to that date, resources in communities tended to be aimed directly at the children. The CPCC's focus was to be on supporting the parents and childcare providers and then, through them, the children in their care. Our uncertainties about the acceptance of the CPCC in Caledon were short-lived. Welcoming faces of the parents who greeted us immediately confirmed that the CPCC would become a much used resource in the community. The main centre in Bolton quickly outgrew its original space as parents and caregivers flocked to the centre."

In 1989, the centre was incorporated and became an independent charitable organization. It has grown from a toy lending library and drop-in centre for approximately 39 families to a full service family resource centre and Ontario Early Years service provider serving more than 500 families.

"As a member of the Bolton and District Home Childcare Providers Network and a regular user of the CPCC/OEYC, I realize how unique this Centre is. Thankfully, providers and the children in their care have always been supported, encouraged and welcomed there," said Barb Gorry, past chairperson.

The entire community is invited to join in marking this important milestone at an open house Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the CPCC/OEYC located in the Albion Bolton Community Centre.

"At the heart of the centre, over the years, has been our marvelous team of committed staff, volunteers and community partners consistently providing a caring and supportive environment for families. We hope that many of you will be able to come as we celebrate together. We look forward to the next 20 years with anticipation and excitement and would like to thank each and every one of you who have been a part of the centre over the last 20 years. Your enthusiasm and sincere commitment to the children and families of Caledon is an investment in the future," said Maureen Thornton, executive director.
