Atom AA Hawks regular season takes off The home opener for the Tri-Star Landscaping/Just in Time atom AA Hawks took place Sept. 28 at Mayfield arena. An early goal from Nando Sirianni only 10 seconds after the initial faceoff got the Hawks off to a quick start as Scott Dominey put a tape to tape pass onto Sirianni's stick from out from behind the opposing net. Rookie Dominey then utilized a strong backhand shot to get the second Hawk goal after Jesse Fir forced the puck in deep. Burlington fought back in the second to tie up the score at 2, but the Hawk forward line of Sirianni, Dominey and Sean Nottle were on fire this night and produced two more goals in one shift in the third. Nottle and Sirianni helped Dominey get the team's first hat trick of the season by charging the net with great speed and being first to the puck. A 4-2 win for the Caledon unit! After a Thanksgiving weekend of tournament games at the Best of the Best, the Hawks returned to Georgetown to seek revenge on the Raiders. Lukas Richardson initiated a passing play with Sirianni which resulted in a pretty goal from Dominey. Georgetown got one of their own, but Nicky Curro didn't waste any time when he slid it in after a wrap around deflection from Jordan Bokla. After Georgetown tied the score at 2 in the first, Caledon took over in the second, applying lots of pressure and team play right in front of the opposing net. Nottle scored with help from a long shot from Richardson. Dominey tallied two more goals, assists going to Richardson and Nottle. The Caledon team overpowered the Raiders and came away with a 5-3 victory. The Brampton Battalions and Hawks played a rare zero penalty game at Mayfield home ice three days later. Christian Hauck, sailing in front of the Brampton goalie slid the first goal in, assists going to Curro and Bokla. Curro applied more pressure with an unassisted goal mid-way through the second period. Brampton came back twice to tie it up and the Hawks settled for a 2-2 final score. The next day the Hawks traveled to Guelph to meet the Storm. Curro took a pass from Hauck and skating wide down the length of the ice, he fired the puck past the Storm goaltender. Guelph got their first goal on a delayed penalty call against the Hawks. Conner Morro and Tyler Whitten forced the play into the Storm end and Fir snapped a high shot from just inside the blue line to make it 2-1 Caledon. The Hawks suffered three unanswered goals as the Storm took over in the third period. Curro got his second goal of the night, assists going to Whitten and Morro. Sirianni, assisted by Hauck managed a goal in the third period, but it wasn't enough to take the game. The Hawks lost this close one 5-4. The Guelph Storm appear to be a team the Hawks will need to have all players at top form for the entire game to beat. After gaining a 2-0 lead in the first with a goal from Curro, assisted by Morro, and Kyle Graham's first goal of the season, assisted by Hauck, the Storm started their fight back. Fir hit the top shelf from inside the blue line, after partner Richardson slid the puck over, but the Hawks, suffering from double penalties, allowed Guelph to come within a goal by the end of the second period. The third period was stolen away from the Hawks as the Storm took over with three additional unanswered goals and gained a final score of 5-3. Stoney Creek visited Mayfield two nights later. Both teams enjoyed some amazing goaltending during the scoreless first two periods. Joseph D'Amico was the wall in net for the Hawks. The only goal of the game was flipped in by Fir off a rebound after being set up by Whitten and Morro. Caledon came away with the well played 1-0 victory. |
