Atom Blackhawks chalk up two more, improve record to six wins

With a record of 4-1-1 heading into November action, the Cucci's Hair Salon/Aspen Architectural Millwork/RBC Insurance Atom Blackhawks faced the Brampton Spitfires in a home-and-away series.

The first of two games was a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Spitfires in which the kids remained focused and positive on the bench, even when down by two goals heading into the third period. The kids were controlling the play for most of the game but still found themselves down 2 goals. Their hard work eventually paid off in the third period as Jessie Gatt slid a harmless looking shot along the ice that found its way through the goalie's five-hole and into the back of the net for the first Blackhawk marker. Jessie was the recipient of a nice pass from Shane Sommers and then pulled the goalie out of position and slid another low shot into the Spitfire goal for the Blackhawks second goal. The Blackhawk go-ahead goal was a thing of beauty by Luca Dovigo who was making his debut as a forward with Riley Telfer out of the line-up due to illness. Using his size, he busted through the middle of the ice and across the blue line with a Spitfire defenceman draped all over him. He powered his way through and slid a low shot under the Spitfire goalie to complete the Blackhawk 3- goal comeback that secured the team its fifth win of the season.

The goaltending duo once again kept the opposition to 2 goals or less, which is something they've managed to do in every game so far. Shane Sommers, Jacob Voogel and Brendan Mizzen played a sound game defensively for the Blackhawks. All forward lines moved the puck well and are to be credited for their unselfish play.

In the second game, the Blackhawks came out skating hard after the coaching staff impressed upon them the need for speed against a quick Spitfire team that gave them trouble the week before.

Gatt, with assists to Marc Anthony DiNenno and Michael Arena, got Caledon off to a good start scoring in the first minute of play. The second Blackhawk goal came from Aaron Hauck when he went top shelf on a power play to make the game 2-0. Brampton scored to keep the game close but Hauck set up Telfer for a late period goal and the period ended 3-1. In the second while on another power play, Jake Mathieson used his speed and completed an almost full circle wide around the Spitfire net, fired the puck back across the front of the goal and it found the fivehole on the Spitfire goalie and slid through over the line.

Philip Iozzo who was huge on a penalty kill, showed that good defence leads to good offence. His fore checking and back checking forced the Spitfires to cough up the puck to Vincent Figliomeni who passed it back to Iozzo then on to Telfer who netted a short handed marker. Arena and Gatt also proved valuable on the penalty kill as Caledon fell into some penalty trouble. Brampton managed to score another goal but the game was never in jeopardy. Hauck added to the score after being set up by Iozzo and the game ended 6-2.

The defence and goaltending tandem of Matthew Campanella and Ernie Colacito continue to do a fine job. The defence are the backbone to a solid offence. They have provided excellent protection for our goalies and are working well together to get the puck up and out of the Hawks' own zone.
