Results of commercial motor vehicle enforcement

Caledon OPP officers partnered with the Ministry of Transportation-Motor Carrier Enforcement Unit and Peel Regional Police officers to conduct a commercial motor vehicle traffic initiative. From Oct. 15 to 18, officers from all three organizations worked in partnership on this enforcement-driven initiative to target commercial motor vehicles.

The co-operative efforts yielded high-end results with a total of 426 commercial vehicles stopped by officers.

* 85 of the total 426 trucks stopped were pulled from the roadway and towed away due to a variety of safety defects.

* 158 equipment charges were laid by officers covering a variety of infractions including some mechanical defects.

* 60 speeding charges. * 33 hazardous moving violations. * 2 charged with drinking and driving offences.

* 1 charge of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

These staggering results are indicative of the lack of concern for road safety displayed by some of our commercial motor vehicle owners and drivers.

Caledon OPP will be expanding the number of officers trained as inspectors of commercial motor vehicles from one officer to three officers.

Caledon OPP's on-going effort to focus on enforcement of commercial motor vehicles is designed to increase compliance with safe driving measures and practices within the trucking industry and supports our continued commitment to reducing injuries and saving lives on our roadways.
