Two Gentlemen of Verona at Mayfield secondary What happens when the composer of the hippie-era Hair takes on William Shakespeare? The result is Two Gentlemen of Verona: the musical an upbeat '70s adaptation of the Bard's classic comedy and this year's fall musical at Mayfield secondary school. This Tony Award-winning best musical's book and lyrics were written by John Guare, author of Six Degrees of Separation, and music by Galt MacDermot, the composer of the ever popular rock musical Hair. Two good friends, Proteous and Valentine, go to Milan, leaving behind their hometown of Verona and Proteous' love, Julia. In the excitement of Milan, Valentine falls in love with Sylvia. Sylvia, however, is already betrothed, unwillingly, to Thurio, a wealthy man of her father's choosing. In a surprising twist, Proteus also falls in love with Sylvia and tries to sabotage Valentine despite his feelings for Julia and his friendship with Valentine. Little does he know, Julia and Lucetta, disguised as men, are on their way to Milan. Dramatic twists in true Shakespearian fashion paired with the upbeat musical stylings of the composer of Hair come together to create a wildly entertaining show that is sure to catch and hold the attention of its audiences. The performances will be Nov. 8, 9, and 10 at Mayfield secondary school, located at 5000 Mayfield Rd. Curtain is at 7:30 and tickets are $12. The Mayfield Drama Parents Association would also invite anyone interested to the dinner theatre. A four-course meal catered by TKS, reserved seats and the Saturday night show for $55 a person.
