Caledon Oldies wrap up the pre-season

The Chris Richie Caledon Oldies Hockey league pre-season wrapped up after three games with two teams undefeated (Teal and Blue), one winless (Maroon), and a 1-2-0 record for White.

Blue 7, White 5

Two evenly matched teams finished only two goals apart, where Dan Whitten's hat trick stood out as the dominant performance of the night. Chris Hawkins and Jim Rogers each had a pair with Kurt Crazylegs Kiser setting up three, and Jim Livingston two.

At the half-way point it was 5-2 for Blue. White goalie Jeff Anderson was dialing 911, but no one was answering.

With league leaders Jamie White and Bill Doherty only getting a goal each, it was up to Rickey Junkin to finish the play on a couple, and team captain Bob Ransom to pick up the slack with another. In the second period White outscored Blue but still lost the game 7-5.

Teal 9, Maroon 5

Teal's Gary Hughes scored twice, assisted by Terry Thompson. The latter, often referred to as the Breakaway Kid, scored on one of three go-alones. The legendary Terry Coles, in addition to plentiful moral support, also assisted on one.

The Rotundo-Unger- Leach line amassed 13 points, none more memorable than Kevin Leach's ice laser from the face-off circle, right along the ice. It was the tying goal and turning point for Teal.

Teal captain Tony Ace Venturo got a goal and the only penalty of the game. He was caught in the act of waving at a 12-foothigh puck, which in this league is strictly verboten.

Howie Phelan who uses his albatross wingspan and eagle eye to control play, scored twice to lead Maroon. Steve Rutherford bagged a nice pair as well, relying on Wayne McTaggart and Tony Phelan for the setups. Joe Power scored the fifth goal for what was a short-lived lead in the second half.

The Chris Richie Oldies Hockey league is for men 45+, and plays every Thursday night at the new Caledon East Arena.
