Minor atom selects fight back to earn the draw

The Caledon Blackhawks minor atom selects played

their 5th game of the season against the Brampton Spitfires at Terry Miller Arena Oct. 13.

The first period ended with the Spitfires up 1 despite chances by Chris Hunter, John Sopinka and Steve Luongo and some solid goaltending by Steven Nelson of the Blackhawks.

The second period showed promise for the Blackhawks as Nelson played strong in goal in the earlier going and the team producing many opportunities to tie the game, including a Christopher Cola shot off the post. It took until the mid-way point of the period though to draw even, when Zachary Infusini scored a powerplay goal with David Ryan drawing the only assist. The game remained tied until the last minute of the period when the Spitfires scored, taking the lead again 2-1 and ending the second period.

There was some work to be done during the third period as the Spitfires added to their late second period goal with a powerplay goal of their own in the first minute of the third. As the period progressed, Russ McCanna was unyielding as he faced a flurry of Spitfire shots.

That seemed to give the Blackhawks new life as they turned it up a notch, increasing the pressure on the Spitfires. With less than 6 minutes left, defenceman Luke Caleca took the puck from inside his own blueline, down the ice to score, unassisted, drawing the Blackhawks closer, at 3-2. The Blackhawks continued to pound away as the seconds disappeared.

With less than 30 seconds left, Cola and Michael Upshall, teamed up with Upshall scoring and Cola drawing the assist on the tying goal. This sealed Michael as the coaches' pick for the player of the game. Final score 3-3.
