Peel waste facility open house

October 20, the Region of Peel will host a free open house at the Peel Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) in support of Waste Reduction Week in Canada.

"Waste Reduction Week is an important initiative aimed at educating our residents on the value and benefits of recycling," said Andrew Pollock, director, waste management. "As part of our commitment to Waste Reduction Week, the Region of Peel is hosting an open house at the Peel Integrated Waste Management Facility to give residents an opportunity to learn about what happens to their blue box and green bin material once it leaves the curb."

The IWMF is the largest of its kind in Canada and houses a single stream Material Recovery Facility (MRF), an organics composting plant and a waste transfer station. The facility opened in March 2006 and is located at 7795 Torbram Rd. in Brampton.

Tours of the facility will be held every 20 minutes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tours will feature a guided walk-through of the MRF where recyclable materials are processed and prepared for market, and an interactive presentation about the MRF and the Organics Composting Facility.

Residents are asked to wear closed-toe, flat shoes for the tour. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Residents that have special requirements can call the Region of Peel at 905-791-9499 before Oct. 20.

Waste Reduction Week is a national event recognized by various regional and municipal councils across Canada. From Oct. 15 to 21, residents and students throughout the Region will learn about the importance of the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

For more information on these programs call the Region of Peel at 905-791- 9499 or in long-distance areas of Caledon call 905- 584-2216.
