Communities mourn the loss of 'best friends' killed in collision

Funeral services were held last week for two best friends killed in an alleged street racing collision on Regional Road 50 south of Bolton Oct. 6.

Killed were Palgrave's Maria Dalsass, 44, and her best friend, Beeton's Cynthia Dougherty, 49. Their vehicle was struck by by an out-of-control driver.

Derrick Dougherty was driving ahead of his wife and saw the accident in his mirror. "Something has to be done about it (street racing)," he said.

Dougherty's funeral took place last Wednesday at the John Thomas Funeral Home in Alliston. Dalsass's funeral took place Friday at Egan's Funeral Home in Bolton.

Two brothers, driving separate vehicles, were charged in the incident. Steven Machado, 22, and Brian Machado, 27, face charges of criminal negligence causing death.
