Caledon player aids in team's cup win
The Winstars Academy was victorious in the first-ever SAAC Academy Cup Finals held at the BMO Field recently. Bolton's own Marco Roberti opened up the scoring in this exciting matchup. The top two teams throughout the season ended up facing off in the boys' final in the second game. Bryst FA and Winstars Academy put on a fine display of fast attacking soccer for the fans in attendance. After a scoreless first half, Winstars opened the scoring when Roberti converted a well taken corner kick with an inclose header. Bryst tied the game when Dustin Denis charged the Winstars' goal area and redirect an attempted clearance by the goalkeeper into the back of the net. The game continued back and forth until the final minutes when Neven Vujinovic corralled a loose ball and and looped a well struck shot over the Bryst keeper. The Winstars were able to hold on in the final minutes to complete the SAAC double after clinching the league championship earlier this month. All three academies taking part in the finals can claim a successful end to their summer season. Although DP Soccer and Winstars took home the titles, Bryst FA can take solace in the fact they they were admirably represented in both games on the day. SAAC would like to extend a special thanks to the BMO Field crew who made sure everything ran smoothly. It truly was a memorable day for all involved. Roberti is the only Caledon player and these academies have players from as far as Hamilton to Mississauga. Winstars academy is in its first year and while located in Oakville, they play out of Country Day Field located in King City. The team consists of players from 16 to 19. |
