Minor bantam AE Hawks begin season with a bang

The Caledon Hawks bantam AE team started the season in fine form with a 5- 1 win against Orangeville.

Scott Foley scored the first goal of the year while Nick Wheeler added two and other singles from Michael Bozzo and Lucas Guadagnini added a marker when Caledon were two man short.

The team then participated in an earlybird tournament in Orangeville. In their first game the Hawks faced off against East Gwillimbury. Even with two players injured (Jonathan Dunn and Nick Wheeler), the Hawks took charge right from the get-go and won 10-1. Player of the game was awarded to Scott Foley who managed to get 4 goals and 3 assists. Tyler Goertzen had 5 assists, while Tyler Begley had 2 goals and 2 assists. Michael Bozzo added a goal and two assists with other goals scored by Michael Newman, John Sheridan and Christian DeMarco.

Game 2, against the Oakville Rangers, was not a pretty picture and the Hawks took the loss with a score of 3-0. Without the great goaltending of Dylan Farrow the final score would have been worse. He managed to stop 33 of the 36 and was awarded player of the game.

Game 3 of the tournament was against the Richmond Hill Kings and Caledon took the win with a score of 6-2. This game was a very physical affair and Michael Bozzo netted 4 goals for the Hawks. Singles were scored by Foley and Michael Newman. Goaltender Peter Coghill did an amazing job only allowing two shots to sneak by him. The list of assists went to Lucas Guadagnini, Goertzen, Sheridan, Bozzo, Begley, Newman (2), Foley (2) and Labine (2). Michael Bozzo was the coaches' player of the game. This win enabled the team to skip the semifinals and head straight to the finals.

Although the team was pumped and ready to go, they knew it would be tough to beat the opposing team from Oakville. End-to-end action kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. The Caledon crowd, however, was the first to cheer as Labine hit the score board first, assisted by Jake Mottershaw and Foley. Early in the second Mottershaw took a slapshot, but was robbed by the opposing goalie. Minutes later, Foley scored on a beautiful pass from Christian Demarco to put Caledon up 2-0. Farrow then was replaced by Coghill and Oakville was able to get two quick goals to tie the game. With a minute and a half to go in the second period, Tyler Begley with help from Goertzen and Guadagnini put the Hawks in the lead once again.

Mid-way through the third the Oakville Rangers scored another two, to win the game. Johnny Sheridan was voted player of the game by both his own coaching staff and the Oakville bench. Chris Sabaziotis, Jacob VanVliet and Daniel Kozluk were all solid defensively throughout the whole tournament.
