Plan fire escape plan Many people and families follow a series of items on a schedule or a to-do list to keep things running smoothly. Sound familiar? There is one item that should get top billing on everyone's list - a home fire escape plan and practice. "October 7 to 13 is Fire Prevention Week - a great time to plan how to safely escape a fire in your home or business," said Mayor Marolyn Morrison. "If everyone knows what to do in case of fire, everyone will be better able to get out of the building quickly." The Town's Fire & Emergency Services Department recommends that a home fire escape plan identifies two ways out of each room. A safe family meeting place outside the home should be determined. Make sure the plan allows for any specific needs in your household, such as accessibility requirements or pet care. Also be aware that some children and adults may not be disturbed by the sound of an alarm during the night, and may need assistance to wake up. Practice using the plan twice yearly. As well as being prepared to escape a fire, it is equally important to be vigilant about preventing one from happening in the first place. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. Test smoke alarms monthly, change batteries twice yearly, and replace the unit every 10 years. During Fire Prevention Week and throughout the month of October, the Caledon community is invited to join Town of Caledon firefighters and staff at the following locations for Fire station open houses: * Saturday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., free hot dogs at 6085 Old Church Road, Caledon East. * Saturday, Oct. 20, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., pancake breakfast, 19630 Main Street, Alton. * Saturday, Oct. 20, 8 to 11:30 a.m., pancake breakfast, 17177 Regional Road 50, Palgrave. * Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 28 Ann Street, Bolton. |
