Council keeps 1/3 allowance

Caledon council voted to keep the one-third tax-free allowance on council members' salaries.

Town treasurer Sam Jones explained council is required to pass a resolution once during its term to continue the one-third tax exemption.

Other municipalities that still keep the one-third taxfree allowance include Ajax, Aurora, Brampton, Clarington, Milton, Newmarket, Orangeville and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Municipalities which discontinued the one-third taxfree allowance include Halton Hills, Mississauga and Peel region.
