Roth Hawks at Uxbridge early bird tournament

Roth Diamond Tools bantam AE Hawks got their season started at the Uxbridge early bird tournament.

In the first game Sept. 14 the opponent was Pickering. Our Hawks started well and half way through the opening period the Hawks first of the season was potted by Cameron Miller on the wrap around with assist to David Rothfuchs.

In the second the Hawks played well but surrendered the only goal registered by the officials despite two pushed in by our boys. The game was not decided until early in the third when Cody Ruff drifted a shot from the point where "Maggs" Magliocchi scooped the rebound home. Good team defence and a sharp Taylor Elkins in net backstopped the 2-1 victory.

Game two Saturday morning was a feisty contest versus the Oakville Rangers. Despite outplaying Oakville for most of the game the Caledon crew could not find the back of the net and skated away on the wrong end of a 1-0 score.

The third game versus Markham was a must-win for the Hawks. Brandon Richard led our boys notching a first period goal unassisted. In the second it was the speedy Chris Scrivo finding paydirt off the feed from Magliocchi. This duo lined up again for an encore with 2 minutes left in the second for the third marker. Markham fought back quickly with two goals before the second ended.

In the third it was an intense Fernando Zambito finding the twine with help from David Rothfuchs providing the insurance marker. Again Taylor Elkins backstopped the Hawks 4-2 win with a strong effort from his defensive core of Daniel Butts, David Rothfuchs, Cody Ruff, Joseph DiMarco and Clark Stewart.

The semifinals that ensued Sunday morning featured a return bout from last years Barrie tournament final against the Colts. Again Caledon started quickly and with 3:53 left in the first Cameron Miller buried another wrap around unassisted to put the Hawks in flight.

In the second Alex Boughen pounded in the one-timer from Richard and Magliocchi. Finally late in the third Richard scored the Hawks' third goal with help from Magliocchi making the final 3-0. Nathan Cole sparkled in net posting a shutout on 18 shots against.

In the final rivals Stoney Creek took it to a tired and banged-up Hawks squad posting a 7-1 score leaving our boys with the silver medal. The lone Hawks' marker was registered by David Rothfuchs with assist to Magliocchi. Overall a great start to the season. Go Hawks!
