Alton businesses mark village's 185th anniversary

Nestled in the rolling Caledon Hills, the historic Village of Alton was first settled in 1822, 45 years before the Confederation of Canada. By the mid-1800s it had grown into a booming industrial centre, largely due to the ample supply of fresh flowing water of Shaw's Creek, which was harnessed to power the many mills that were built along this powerful current.

Today, 185 years later, Shaw's Creek is no longer the rushing torrent it once was. Nor is the village through which it flows the bustling hub of activity it used to be. However, the historical spirit of the now serene Village of Alton is as alive as ever.

Once the home of dozens of mills, (some of which remain as family residences, The Millcroft Inn & Spa and The Alton Mill - now a centre for the arts) Alton has evolved into a quaint destination for those seeking championship-calibre golf, original works by some of Ontario's most renowned artists, great food, superb shopping and/or a relaxing escape from the stresses of modern life. It is also home to the oldest public school in Ontario, beautiful churches and century homes, a trail system that connects with The Bruce Trail, and some of the most beautiful natural surroundings in southern Ontario.

Saturday, Sept. 29, the Village of Alton will be marking its 185th year of settlement with a village celebration organized and sponsored by the Alton Business Committee - formed by Gallery Gemma, Beaver Mills Design, The Alton Mill, Osprey Valley Golf Club, and The Millcroft Inn & Spa. The festivities will run from 10 a.m. to roughly 4 p.m. and will feature events and activities for the entire family, including a pipe and drum parade, children's choir performances, face painting, guided historical building and village tours, and a barbecue lunches provided by both Martha's Antiques and Ray's Bakery - a family run business that has been in operation at the same location for more than 40 years. There will also be a celebratory birthday cake for all to enjoy.

It is sure to be a great family event, and all are encouraged to visit, explore and join the celebration of one of Caledon's truly historic villages.
