Eat Local Week proclaimed The first annual Eat Local Week to be held Sunday, Sept. 9 through Saturday, Sept. 15 was proclaimed by Caledon council last Tuesday. Jennifer Clark and Karen Hutchinson of Caledon Countryside Alliance explained the local food program and Eat Local Week to council. Clark, who was hired by CCA in May to co-ordinate the local food program, said they want to increase public awareness of buying locally. They also want to increase the amount of people buying from local farmers and food producers, and facilitate connections between local producers and local retailers, restaurants and institutions. Events planned for Eat Local Week include a Caledon farmers market, a local food cooking class and a local food potluck dinner hosted by Mayor Marolyn Morrison. Clark added there will be a chance to win prizes throughout the week. Hutchinson, who is the executive director of CCA, said they want to put Caledon in the news for something interesting and exciting. Councillor Nick deBoer said they need to push Ontario products. "This is a good start here," he said. He added Caledon has leaders in the food industry. |
