Walkway approved To address pedestrian safety concerns, Caledon council approved last Tuesday the construction of a temporary 1.5-metre wide asphalt walkway along the west side of Airport Road from Leamster Trail to Walker Road in Caledon East. At its July 3 meeting council received a petition signed by 39 Caledon East homeowners requesting a sidewalk at this location. The matter was referred to public works and engineering staff for a report. Craig Campbell, director of public works and engineering, explained in his report the pathway wouldn't be straight, but would meander in some locations to keep tree removal to a minimum. He estimate it will cost about $30,000 for the design and construction of the walkway to be funded from savings within the 2007 capital budget. Mayor Marolyn Morrison told Campbell that all of council is appreciative he's found a way to address this situation. During public question period, Caledon East resident Peter McDonald thanked council and public works and engineering staff for the walkway. Campbell said it's difficult to give an exact time as to when the walkway will be constructed because he hasn't spoken to the contractors yet. He's hoping it can be done by the end of September. |
