Pitfalls of changes to voting As usual, Claire Hoy gets to the heart of the matter (Voter Education ..., Citizen, July 11). Who but a moron would be in favour of the Mickey Mouse system we are being asked to consider in October? What kills it stone dead before you even start to think is that there would be more politicians shouting at one another in the House, many of them unelected. Who, I wonder, would fall for a con game like that? Low voter turnout is making a mockery of our political system and, as Hoy points out, while it is widely agreed that better understanding of the system would improve matters, this is hardly likely to be achieved by the daft proposal in question. I detect a trend towards making the voting procedure not only more complicated, but less user-friendly. For example, I strenuously object to being required to show ID when I am clutching in my hot little hand a voter registration card. And, I want to continue making a cross on a piece of paper with a blunt pencil, as has been the case everywhere I have lived, except Mississauga. So, if any "progressives" are contemplating following Mississauga by introducing voting machines in October, please be advised that I shall walk out, and not go back. John C. Tysoe Cheltenham |
